Format // Colour // Production // Process // Stock // Finishing
We created lists of key terms for each category followed by a short summarising definition. This was to help us understand the boundaries between each of the key elements when designing for print.
FORMAT:
-Magazines
-CD inserts
-Business Cards
-Flyers
Definition: The way the designer chooses to arrange or layout the final physical outcome.
COLOUR:
-Monochrome
-CMYK
-One-colour/full-colour
Definiton: Appropriate to the audience and other contributing/ relevant factors within the design.
PRODUCTION:
-Bookbinding
-Assembling
Definition: The way the printed piece is made/ assembled. In some cases it covers everything after the print process from start to finish. (It is hard to define between production and process).
PROCESS:
-Digital
-Screen Print
-Inkjet
Definition: The chosen way to print the inks onto paper/ stock itself.
STOCK:
-Metal
-Wood
-Paper
Definition: The material the design is applied to.
FINISHING:
-Foiling
-Embossing
-Spot Varnish
Definition: Extra/ additional processes to final the product.
_____________
As a group we then agreed one ideal way to summarise our findings from all of these elements was:
All processes work together (synthesise) to produce successful, appropriate and effective design for print. Each element is individually definable but these all work more effectively as a whole.
