Responsive Design Task

Re-writing the brief

The Brief --
The Outsiders by S.E Hinton

Concept/Proposition --
Using themes and concepts from The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, produce a striking cover which is appealing to a new generation on teenagers. All elements must work effectively as a cohesive whole. The jacket should also speak for itself when seen on a bookshelf amongst other books. Your cover design needs to include all the cover copy as supplied and be designed to the specified design template (B format, 198mm high x 129mm wide, spine 17mm wide).

Considerations --
How have teenage generations changed over time? How different are teenagers interests now, in comparison to previous generations? What elements are most important in book jacket design? Will the cover consist mainly of type, image, image and type combined?

Background --
The Outsiders, first published in 1967, is a Puffin Modern Classic. The novel is written in a powerful and honest first-person format. This novel, amongst others, changed the way people looked at young adult literature.

Target Audience --
The novel is aimed towards teenagers. This would be to pick up and buy for themselves, but also adults to buy for them.

Tone of Voice --
Informal, serious, powerful.

Mandatory Requirements --
  • Imaginative concept and original interpretation of the brief
  • Competently executed idea with strong use of typography
  • Appeal to the broadest possible audience for the book
  • Show a good understanding of the marketplace
  • Have a point of difference from the many other book covers it is competing against
  • Be able to sit on the shelves of a supermarket or ebook store as easily as it sits on those of more traditional bookshops
Deliverables --
A book jacket fitting to specified measurement (B format, 198mm high x 129mm wide, spine 17mm wide).
