Grids & Devine Proportions

The Fibonacci Sequence
-The Fibonacci sequence ratio is 8.13. This links to the Golden Section

-This is evident in both design and nature. The human face follows the ratio.
-The shape derives from a shell.

-The Fibonacci Sequence is a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of two preceding numbers.
-One way of visually representing fibonacci is:

Step 1. Draw two small squares together.
Step 2. Draw a third square using the combined lengths of the two original original squares.
Step 3. Continue this process.

-A 55point title should be complemented with a 34point body copy by applying Fibonacci Sequence.

Th Golden Section/ The Golden Rectangle
1.62 is the golden number.
-Golden Section forms the basis of paper sizes.
-It can be used to achieve well-balanced designs.
-Many ancient cultures E.g Egyptians and Greeks used this to achieve beautifully balanced proportions.

-When using the golden section to divide a page the page size must be divided by 1.62. This generates a good balance for text/image ratio.
-If this process is repeated enough times it will gradually form a grid within the page as shown in the diagram below.

Our next task was to experiment using the golden section principles. We divided our gridded paper into the golden ratio as shown below:

The Rule of Thirds
-This governs the placement of points of interest in a scene.
-Divide any given image into thirds both vertically and horizontally and a 9x9 grid will be formed.
-According to rule of thirds, the verticals (where the lines intersect) are the ideal place for points of interest.

Using our own magazines, we divided a variety of page spreads into 9x9 grids in order to discover if the rule of thirds had been applied.

As another small task we were asked to break down and cut out our own layouts using grid principles...
