OUGD504 Design Production Briefing

This module will be broken into three briefs:
Brief 1: What is design for print?
Brief 2: Designing for web
Brief 3: Design, application, production.

Remember:
Physical print is finite, it can't be altered.
Digital print (e.g web) is ever-changing and removable.

Task 1.
Within your summer project groups answer: What is design for print?

What is design for print?
After a short group discussion, we created a list of terms relevant to print and designing for print:

-Magazines
-Newspapers
-Books
-Zines
-Business cards
-Stationary
-Leaflets
-Packaging
-Posters
-Mailshots
-Book covers
-Billboards
-Maps
-Wallpaper
-Paper Bags
-Clothing
-Laser Print
-CMYK/ One Colour / RGB
-Design Considerations
-Scale
-Colour
-Bleeds
-Stock
-Mockups/prototypes
-Application
-Audience
-Process - physical/digital
-Cost
-Quantity
-Colour/grayscale

We were then asked to summarise these terms to form a definition of design for print. This definition needed to be basic in order for both designers and non-designers to understand. The final definition we agreed on was:

"In order to design for print, the designer must take the appropriate audience, context, processes and materials into consideration to produce an ideal outcome."

We felt this was the most appropriate definition as it was clear, informative and covered the general basic principles of design for print.

Task 2.
As a group, list as many print processes as you can think of:

-Embossing
-Foiling
-Lino print
-Etching
-Screen print
-Glossing
-Monoprint
-Digital
-Lithograph
-3D print
-Lazer cutting
-Stamping
-Guilding
-Letterpress
-Spot Varnish
-Block Print
-Vinyl Cut
-Collegraph

We were then asked to choose which of these processes we would like to improve on this year. My personal choices are highlighted in bold above.

Task for next week:
From the following list, find two examples for each category and document these on your blog.
Next Week: Bring in 5 examples of print. Try to find a broad range of examples.
